A few days ago I was at Kidepo Valley National Park for a refresher nature guide training for the Rangers.
Kidepo remains the leading breathtaking scenic National Park in Uganda. The plains, coupled with panoramic view of rolling hills, enriched with very large herds of Buffalos and Elephants, will always thrill the tourists.
Kidepo is the only place in Uganda where you can see a buffalo herd with over 2000 members. A few years ago I counted over 200 elephants in one herd.
Birding ranks the top in the entire northern region of Uganda. The Karamoja subregion that brings together Pian upe, Bokora and Matheniko wildlife reserves have the highest number of Uganda’s most sought after birds. The first time I went to Kidepo I saw over 30 lifers. This was after I had spent over 20 years watching birds.
Diversity of wildlife makes Kidepo National Park compete for the topmost position considering Murchison Falls and Lake Mburo National Parks.
In the last ten years, many new animals and birds have been recorded. Some of them had been thought to be extirpated. White-eared Kob, (Kobus kob leucotis), Lesser Kudu, hunting dogs, are some of those.
A few days ago, we were able to confirm that the antelope which had been confused to be the Thompson Gazelle is actually the Mongala Gazelle (Eudorcas albonotata) . Thanks to Mr. Musime Muramura, Mark Bankunda who were very keen in observing the differences.
Staff.
The UWA management at Kidepo have done all it takes to motivate staff. This had been a challenge over the years. From the waiter in the restaurant to the supervisor. They were all there working together attending to us all the time. For the first time, Kidepo has a full time restaurant serving local dishes.
Accommodation.
become a bad tomato have been worked on very well. They are now very good
The New bandas have changed the feeling of being in Kidepo as a remote and neglected wilderness. Excellent self contained cottages.
Roads.
Most of the roads have been worked on. The management is starting to work road that goes to South Sudan through Kidepo valley and the hot springs. ( actually warm springs).
