Mabamba is the leading spot for Shoebill sighting in Africa. Birding is done on the dug-out canoes operated by the community. Birding here started way back in 1996. There has been continuous training of the community about conservation by Nature Uganda, Uganda Bird  Guides Club, Bird Uganda Safaris and several other projects.   Mabamba wetland community have demonstrated commitment to conservation by ensuring that the wetland is safe from traditional hunters and poachers.
